ANTISCIA 2025

Antiscia are symmetries around the seasonal turning points: solstice and equinox. These turning points are also known as the Cardinal Axis. The cardinal axis is comprised of the zero degree ingress points of the four cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, which mark the beginning of each season. Antiscia and contra-antiscia are reflections that fall equidistant -forward and back- across the seasonal turning points (aka cardinal ingress points). Degrees (or days) in antiscia and contra-antiscia mirror one another across these turning points.

Antiscia cross the Cancer/Capricorn ingress points and share the same amount of daylight. They are said to share power as they mirror quantity of light. Contra-antiscia, across the Aries/Libra equinox points, share ascensional time. This is the speed a sign rises on the local horizon, and two signs share in quantity of time. Antiscia/contra-antiscia reflections and mirror points are referred to as SHADOWS and are sometimes known as solstice points.

Planets, points, or degrees in antiscia and contra-antiscia reflect one another across the cardinal axis. The cardinal axis is formed by the four seasonal turning points: zero degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. The cardinal axis is essentially the node of the Sun. As the earth orbits the Sun it is the intersection of two Great Circles, the ecliptic, the sun's path from our perspective, a.k.a. tropical zodiac, and the earth's equator.

Planets connect in antiscia when they mirror or reflect one another across the axis. Much like a planetary statement made by two planets in aspect, conjunction, or midpoint, planets in antiscia make a terrestrial or mundane statement for the day: a statement for the world that is relevant for all of the earth’s inhabitants. Therefore planets in antiscia provide mundane insights into the energy of the day, week, or month.

Antiscia is also very useful in delineating birth charts, seeing relationship synastry, and in dynamic timing of outer events and inner developments in one’s life.

Twelfth century philosopher and astrologer Ibn Ezra wrote: “You always have to look at degrees that are of the same ascension. An example is when one planet is 10 degrees Aries and the other is at 20 degrees Pisces, so the distance of both of them from the Line of Justice [equinox axis] is equal and they are considered as being in conjunction.”

To use the list of antiscia below, simply blend the meanings of planets in combination.

For help with delineation of planetary pairs, you may want to utilize books I reference on this page — or use an online resource like this one by John Sandbach — or simply apply your basic astrological knowledge of the planets. You can think of the pairs and combinations as conjunctions.

To take your interpretations further, consider the shared or reflected essential dignity or reception of the planets involved. You may also combine house meanings: look to where planets in antiscia are positioned in the chart, and consider how these topics blend and interact.

  • All connections below are within 30 minutes of arc or less (they are very close to exact).

  • Dates showing one planet indicate its ingress onto the cardinal axis (meaning it resides at zero degrees cardinal (or 29 mutable) and ought to feature prominently that day).

  • Those with *c indicate contra-antiscia: symmetries around the Aries/Libra (equinox) axis—signs of equal rising. These are just as powerful as antiscia.

  • The other are antiscia: signs of equal power and light (sharing quantity of light).

When planets connect by antiscia or contra-antiscia, a planetary pair is formed. These pairs provide insight into the energy of the day as well as enriching natal chart delineation. Why antiscia...

There's a flurry of antiscional activity mid-month when the Sun and Pluto meet-up in antiscia at the same time Mars comes to the contra-antiscion of Jupiter; this occurs December 11th to 14th (with Uranus stationing direct on the 13th). Note the Mercury/Pluto antiscion on December 24/25th.
hmmm...

Happy winter solstice!

To use this list, simply blend the meanings of the planets in combination. Bold dates indicate a particular planetary expression is at its most exact (within 10 minutes of arc). Dates showing only one planet indicate its ingress into a cardinal sign, or to 15 degrees of a fixed sign (meaning: it is sitting directly on the cardinal axis and so should feature prominently that day). Those marked with an asterisk are antiscia formed around the midpoint of two cardinal signs (the midpoint = 15 fixed). Those with a (c) indicate contra-antiscia and are symmetrical arrangements around the Aries/Libra axis.

Planets in antiscia and contra-antiscia reflect one another across the cardinal axis. They have been recognized to show sympathy and connection for at least two thousand years. Every planet at any given time has a shadow-point reflected across the axis, when another planet moves into the domain of this shadow a connection is established. This connection creates a planetary pair, with the Aries Point (which is any of the zero degree points of the cardinal signs) at the midpoint. These planetary pairs provide insight into the energy of the day, as well as enhancing delineation of a natal chart.

The cardinal axis (Aries Point) is essentially the Node of the Sun. It is through this point that each one of us connects to the world, and so it is a point we all share.

To use this list, simply blend the meanings of planets in combination. Bold dates indicate the strongest day for a particular planetary expression. Those marked with an asterisk are antiscia formed around the midpoint of two Cardinal signs, the midpoint being 15 degrees Fixed. Those with a (c) indicate contra-antiscia and are sympathetic signs arranged around the Aries/Libra axis.

This month things may get a bit squirrelly around the 14/15th when the Sun comes to the direct antiscia of Uranus - at the same time picking up Pluto by 45 - where Mars rests at their exact midpoint. Sun + Uranus|Pluto = Mars @ 15 Scorpio.

On the 90 degree dial, the combination looks like this:

I assume it has to do with the presidency since the TNP Kronos, a symbol of ruling powers, great height, and government, is tied in with the ongoing Uranus Pluto revolutionary square aspect. Sun|Kronos classically represents the president

Hmmm...

Following the intense Sun Uranus Pluto Mars business, we will see a return of the antiscia of Saturn|Neptune. This combination lingered on the cardinal axis for a long time earlier this year (late January through early April 2012). Expect issues important then to be very up again.

The sociological correspondence and probable manifestations of Saturn|Neptune per Reinhold Ebertin's often depressing work, The Combination of Stellar Influences, says:

Poor, sick or depressed persons.

+ The methodical execution of plans, the slow attainment of success through intense activity and great painstaking effort.

- Painful or tormenting inhibitions, undermining circumstances also leading to a state of illness, neuroses or diseases with causes difficult to ascertain.

Sun @ 0 Libra brings extra focus to Saturn|Neptune on the 22nd:

Feedback, questions or comments are welcome.

ANTISCIA Aug/2012

After a little summer break, the list of monthly antiscia is back!

Antiscia and contra-antiscia have been recognized and used for 2,000 years as a way to show connection and sympathy between planets and signs. Planets in antiscia reflect or mirror one another across the cardinal axis. Favored by Uranians, and used by Hellenistic, Persian, Medieval, and modern tropical astrologers in the know, these perfectly symmetrical arrangements, falling equidistant from any of the four zero cardinal points (0 Cancer/Capricorn and 0 Aries/Libra), add insight in both natal and mundane chart delineation. Antiscia is another factor to consider when tracking or contemplating the energies (or astrological weather) of a point in time.

The cardinal axis marks the turning of the seasons at the solstice and equinox. Sometimes referred to simply as the Aries Point, the cardinal axis is important because everything on earth is affected by seasonal change, it is through this point that each one of us connects to the world. The cardinal axis is a factor we all share.

For about 2,000 years antiscia and contra-antiscia have been recognized to show connection and sympathy between planets and signs. Planets in antiscia reflect or mirror one another across the cardinal axis. Favored by Uranians, these perfectly symmetrical arrangements, which fall equi-distant from any of the four zero cardinal points (0 Cancer/Capricorn and 0 Aries/Libra), add insight to the day's expression, in addition to making a valuable statement in a natal chart and in synastry between charts.
